Some fun runs make you earn the scenery. The Bay Run just hands it to you. Held each August around the sparkling waters of Iron Cove in Sydney's Inner West, this is one of the most relaxed, family-friendly and downright joyful events on the city's running calendar — a community institution that's been pulling locals, elite runners, kids and (yes) dogs onto the foreshore for nearly two decades. The 2026 edition lands on Sunday 2 August.

The course

The headline event is a flat, fast and gloriously scenic 7km loop of Iron Cove. Starting and finishing at Leichhardt Oval No. 3, the course follows the much-loved Bay Run path through Leichhardt and Rozelle, over the Iron Cove Bridge, and back through Drummoyne, Five Dock and Haberfield, with water views for almost the entire lap. It's pancake-flat and traffic-free, which makes it brilliant for a first-timer chasing a finish line or a club runner after a sharp hit-out.

Distances

There's the 7km for runners and walkers, and a 2km kids' dash for the little legs. The emphasis here is firmly on taking part rather than smashing a PB — though the front of the 7km field is genuinely quick.

More than a run

The Bay Run leans hard into community fun: there's a fancy-dress tradition, a festival atmosphere at the finish, and the much-loved "Fastest Dog in the Inner West" category, where your four-legged best friend can race for glory (their entry is free — just register them). The event also partners with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, so you can fundraise for a genuinely worthy cause while you're at it.

Getting there and entering

Leichhardt Oval is well served by buses, and there's parking around the Inner West if you're driving — though arriving early is wise on race morning. Register through the official site, where you can also grab the 2026 event tee and cap. Whether you're running, walking, pushing a pram or being towed by an enthusiastic Dalmatian, the Bay Run is about as good as a Sunday morning in Sydney gets.
