Runners and spectators at the NT City2Surf Darwin fun run

Most City2Surf races end at the beach. This one starts at the harbour and ends at one of the most spectacular sunset beaches in Australia. The NT City2Surf on Sunday 14 June 2026 is Darwin's most iconic road race, and it's the kind of event that only works in the Top End — warm, vibrant, and finished at Mindil Beach Reserve just in time to enjoy the view.

The course

The 13km course starts on the Darwin Esplanade — right on the waterfront, with views across Darwin Harbour — and winds through the city before finishing at Mindil Beach Reserve. The route has been updated for 2026 with a new course design. It's not a flat sprint, but Darwin's relatively mild June conditions (the dry season is the best time of year in the Territory) make it one of the more pleasant running environments in the country. Expect blue skies, low humidity, and temperatures that feel genuinely comfortable compared to a Darwin summer.

The distances

  • NT City2Surf 13km — the main event, starting from the Darwin Esplanade
  • Minisurfer 4km — run or walk; perfect for newcomers, families, or anyone who wants the race experience without the full distance
  • Macca's Mile — a kids' event for young runners completing the Marathon4Kids program

Running for a reason

The NT City2Surf partners with the Royal Flying Doctor Service as its charity partner — particularly meaningful in the Northern Territory, where the RFDS plays a vital role in providing healthcare to remote communities. You can donate during registration or set up a fundraising page to run for a cause.

Tips for race day

  • The dry season is ideal, but it's still the NT. Sun protection is essential. Even in June, Darwin delivers intense sun once it's up. Start hydrated and use sunscreen.
  • The finish at Mindil Beach is worth it. There's an atmosphere at the end that you won't find at many Australian running events — Darwin knows how to celebrate.
  • Accommodation is easy. Darwin's CBD has plenty of hotels within walking distance of the Esplanade start line.

If you've ever thought about running in the Northern Territory, the NT City2Surf is the reason to book the flights. Darwin in the dry season is genuinely stunning, and crossing the finish line at Mindil Beach is one of the more memorable ways to end a race in Australia.
