Red dirt path beside large rock formation and trees in the Australian outback

Most running events happen in cities, or at least near a petrol station. Run Larapinta happens in the ancient red-rock heart of Australia, on a trail that follows the spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges across one of the most remote and geologically extraordinary landscapes on earth. Running here is less a sport and more a spiritual experience — the kind of thing that stays with you long after your legs have recovered and your tan lines have faded.

The Larapinta Trail

The Larapinta Trail is 223km long, stretching from the old Telegraph Station in Alice Springs to the summit of Mount Sonder in the western MacDonnell Ranges. Run Larapinta covers sections of this trail over four days, passing through spinifex grassland, dramatic gorges, ancient river beds, and exposed ridgelines with views that stretch to every horizon. The landscape is otherworldly — all ochre, russet, and sienna under a sky that turns extraordinary colours at dusk. Running here is something that very few people ever get to do, which makes it all the more extraordinary when you do.

The stage race format

The 2026 Run Larapinta Stage Race runs from Friday 14 August to Monday 17 August. Two course options are available: the Malbunka (long course) with stages ranging from 19.5km to 41km, and the Namatjira (short course) with stages ranging from 13.5km to 27km. Each day is a self-contained stage with its own start and finish, with logistics handled by the Rapid Ascent team — meaning you run, and they handle shuttles, camp, and catering. It's expedition running without the expedition logistics headache.

Entry and the waitlist

Run Larapinta entries sell out extremely quickly — the full stage packages sold out within hours of opening for 2026. A waitlist operates, and limited single-stage entries may be available. If this race is on your radar, register for the waitlist and bookmark the entry page for next year's opening. This is the kind of event where planning 12 months ahead is genuinely worthwhile.

Getting there

Alice Springs Airport receives direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide. The town of Alice Springs has good accommodation options, and the race village and logistics hub are well-organised for visiting runners. The August timing is ideal — the desert winter means cool days and clear skies, with temperatures that are genuinely pleasant for running rather than the scorching heat that defines summer in Central Australia.
