A bloody long walk for a good cause

The Bloody Long Walk is one of Australia's favourite charity challenges — a 35km walk (or run, if you're keen) that raises funds for the Mito Foundation to help find a cure for mitochondrial disease. The Melbourne edition is a scenic city-to-bay adventure, winding from Yarra Bend Park along the river down to the seaside at St Kilda, tackled solo or as a team.

What to expect

It's a long but achievable day on your feet, following well-marked paths with rest stops, snacks and plenty of encouragement along the way. Most participants walk it in teams, soaking up the camaraderie and the cause, though you're welcome to jog sections if you're feeling fit. The bayside finish is a genuine celebration of a big achievement.

Good to know

Held in May, Melbourne's autumn usually delivers cool, comfortable walking weather. Train up with some long walks beforehand — 35km is no joke — and break in your shoes to avoid blisters. Every entrant fundraises for the Mito Foundation, so rally your friends and family behind your team. Register online via the official Bloody Long Walk website.
