City to Surf is Western Australia's biggest community run, going since 1975 and held each year on the last Sunday of August. genU has not opened 2027 entries yet, but on the event's long-standing pattern the 2027 race falls on Sunday 29 August. It is the state's flagship fundraiser for genU, which supports people living with disability.
Two distances both finish at City Beach Oval. The 12km is the main event, starting in the CBD at the corner of St Georges Terrace and William Street and heading out through Perth's western suburbs to the coast, rolling rather than flat. The 4km starts at McLean Park in Floreat and suits families and first-timers. A virtual option runs over a week for anyone who can't make the day.
It is a big field — more than 23,000 finished the 12km alone in 2026, and historically over 40,000 have taken part across the distances — so it carries the noise and atmosphere of a major event. The finish at City Beach puts the ocean a few steps from the line.
Enter early for the best price, and plan transport in advance. Road closures around the CBD start and the City Beach finish make public transport and a sorted pick-up point the sensible call.
Matthew Ramsden won the 12km in 35:49 on Sunday 30 August 2026, 45 seconds clear of Matt Smith, with Rohan Hickey third in 38:08. Amy Buckingham was the fastest woman in 42:52, 28th overall in a 12km field of more than 23,000.
