Run The Maine is a much-loved community event in Castlemaine, in the heart of the Victorian Goldfields, held on Friday 25 September 2026 for its 18th year. Based at Camp Reserve, it has a genuinely unusual drawcard: half marathon runners ride a historic steam train out to the start at Maldon, then race the point-to-point course back to Castlemaine.
There are three distances. The flagship 21.1km half runs Maldon to Castlemaine; the 10km is a challenging bush run through the Walmer Forest and Flora and Fauna Reserve; and the 5km is a flat run or walk looping the town's Botanical Gardens. Every entry supports Dhelkaya Health, the local health service, which the event has raised more than $300,000 for over the years. It is a warm, well-run day out in one of central Victoria's most characterful towns.
The same two runners fought out the half again on Friday 26 September 2025, and again Tristan Van Pagee Anderson came out ahead — this time by sixteen seconds, 1:14:50 to John Howorth's 1:15:06. Both were more than two minutes quicker than a year earlier. Daniel Richards was third, close to seven minutes off the winner. Claire Johnson won the women's race for a second year in 1:27:07, seventh overall from 351 finishers.
