The Broome International Airport Marathon is a genuine one-off: a marathon run entirely on the hard-packed sand of Cable Beach, one of the great beaches of the world, on the Kimberley coast of WA. The 2027 event is on 11 July. The marathon is four laps of an out-and-back along the beach, turning at Gantheaume Point, with a two-lap half marathon and a single-lap 10.5km dash also on offer, all starting and finishing by the Cable Beach surf club.
It's timed for the dry season, when Broome's weather is at its best and the firm morning sand makes the running surprisingly fast. A bucket-list destination race — pair it with a sunset camel ride and you have a proper north-west weekend.
