Runners at ASICS Run Melbourne

Running through Melbourne's CBD with the roads all to yourself sounds like a fever dream, but every July, 28,000 runners get to make it a reality. ASICS Run Melbourne is one of Australia's most beloved city running events, and in 2026 it's back on 19 July with a fast, flat course that cuts through the heart of the city and finishes at Melbourne Park — one of the great sporting venues on the planet.

The distances

There are four events to choose from:

  • ASICS Half Marathon (21.1km) — starting at 6:30am
  • La Roche-Posay 10K — starting at 9:30am
  • Runner's World 5.5K — starting at 10:40am
  • Kids 2K Dash — for the little legends

All courses run through Melbourne's CBD on fully closed roads, which means no dodging cars or traffic lights — just open road, cheering crowds, and the smell of coffee wafting from every laneway.

The course

The half marathon course is famously flat and fast, making it a genuine PB opportunity. You'll run through Melbourne's streets past iconic landmarks and city neighbourhoods before finishing inside Melbourne Park — home of the Australian Open and one of the loudest finish lines in Australian running. If you've ever wanted to run into a sporting arena to a roaring crowd, this is your chance.

It's about more than the race

Over 18 years, Run Melbourne has raised over $21 million for charity. If you run for a charity partner, you can even score free entry — worth knowing if you haven't registered yet. The event village at Melbourne Park post-race is also a highlight: food, drinks, live music, and the entirely justified smugness of having just run through one of the world's great cities before most people have eaten breakfast.

Getting in

Register at runmelbourne.com.au. Online entries close at 4pm the day before the event, with on-day entries available from 5:30am on race morning at Melbourne Park. Entry prices vary by distance and early-bird window — earlier is cheaper, as always.

Tips for race day

  • Dress for a Melbourne July morning. The half marathon starts at 6:30am and it will be cold. Layers are your friend — a cheap throwaway layer at the start is a well-worn Run Melbourne tradition.
  • Take public transport. Train to Flinders Street or Southern Cross and you're right in the heart of things. Don't attempt to drive in.
  • Start conservatively. The flat CBD streets will tempt you to go out hard. Save something for the Melbourne Park finish.
  • Book your post-run brunch early. Melbourne has no shortage of great cafés, but race day means competition. Have a spot in mind before you start.

Run Melbourne is that rare event that manages to be both genuinely competitive and genuinely fun. Whether you're chasing a half marathon PB or just want to run through the middle of Melbourne on a winter's morning, this one delivers every time.
