Runners on the Somerset Rail Trail Classic course

Want a running event with a side of country charm? The Somerset Rail Trail Classic is a friendly community run and ride along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, Australia's longest recreational rail trail, through the scenic Somerset region west of Brisbane. Now in its 23rd year, the 2026 event is on Sunday 12 July.

The course

Set on the historic Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, the event serves up gentle gravel-path running with breathtaking views of the Brisbane Valley and river. Choose the 8km from Lowood to Fernvale, or the family-friendly 3km from Vernor to Fernvale, both finishing at Fernvale Sports Park. The 3km and 8km kick off at 9am. There are 20km and 44km bike-ride options too if you'd rather roll than run.

Family-friendly fun

This is a run-or-walk event built around sharing an active, healthy day out with family, friends or workmates. Prams are welcome, and there's a Team Championship for workplaces and clubs who want some friendly rivalry. It's a Somerset Regional Council initiative, with proceeds supporting local beneficiaries.

Entry and getting there

Entry is excellent value, with adults from $35 early bird, kids from $15, and a family ticket covering two adults and up to three children. Early-bird pricing closes 12 June. Register through the official site. The Somerset region is around an hour west of Brisbane, making it an easy day trip or a relaxed country weekend.
