The McLaren Vale Marathon has been discontinued. After four editions through South Australia's McLaren Vale wine region, the 2026 event was cancelled when the City of Onkaparinga declined to support the road closures the organiser, Great Southern Runs, needed to stage it, and the organiser has since wound the event up rather than run a reduced course.
At its peak it offered a marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km and a kids' dash on sealed roads through the vines, with the marathon and half run on a World Athletics and AIMS certified course. It is no longer held.
Still keen to run in McLaren Vale? The McLaren Vale Running Festival, run by the South Australian Road Runners Club, offers a half marathon, 10km and 5km along the Shiraz Trail each October.
Justin Beard won the 2025 McLaren Vale Marathon in 2:49:35 on Sunday 1 June, holding off James Duffy by under a minute. Alicia Kane was first woman home in 3:09:06, tenth overall. It proved to be the last marathon run here.
