Rows of green vineyard plants under a clear sky

McLaren Vale is the kind of place that makes you question your life choices — specifically, why you don't live somewhere with this much beauty, this much wine, and this much good food. Running through it, past the vines with the Fleurieu Coast visible in the distance and the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges behind you, is one of the more joyful experiences available to Australian runners. The McLaren Vale Marathon is a World Athletics and AIMS dual-certified event on a sealed road course that has built a devoted following since its inception.

The course

The Marathon (two laps) and Half Marathon (one lap) courses wind entirely through McLaren Vale's vineyard roads, 100% sealed, with the backdrop of the Mount Lofty Ranges and views toward the Fleurieu Coast. Both distances are AIMS and World Athletics certified, making times eligible for international ranking and qualification. The rolling terrain keeps it interesting without being brutal.

The distances

Marathon (42.2km), Half Marathon (21.1km), 10km, and 5km. All distances run on the same certified road network through the vines. The event typically sells out, so early registration is strongly recommended at mclarenvalemarathon.com.au.

Beyond the race

The finish line is set up for celebration: markets, cellar door, food trucks, and live music make the post-race atmosphere genuinely excellent. McLaren Vale has extraordinary wineries — d'Arenberg, Wirra Wirra, Coriole, and dozens more are all within easy reach. Stay for the weekend.

Getting there

McLaren Vale is about 40km south of Adelaide CBD, roughly 35 minutes by car via the Southern Expressway. Adelaide Airport is your gateway for interstate travellers. The town itself has good accommodation and is well set up for visitors.
