The NSW 5,000m Championships is the state title over 12.5 laps of the track, held each February at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre on Edwin Flack Avenue. The 2027 edition is set for Saturday 13 February. As an Athletics NSW permit meet, times are eligible for state records and national qualifying, so the sharp end of the field runs fast in the warm summer conditions.
Run as part of the summer track season, the championship is typically split into graded races so athletes line up against others of similar pace, with the fastest heat deciding the open state medals. It sits alongside the NSW 10,000m Championships as the state's two track distance titles, and for many club runners it is the key 5000m target of the summer.
