Ultra marathons have a reputation for being sufferfests in remote wilderness — and while that's sometimes accurate, the Surf Coast Century is something else entirely. Running along the Great Ocean Road coastline between Torquay and Aireys Inlet, this is an ultra marathon where the views are so good you'll forget you're in pain. Well, maybe not forget. But they help. It's been called "the feel-good ultra" and that's a description that rings true: this is a hard race in a beautiful place, and the finish at Airey's Inlet has a warmth to it that's hard to replicate.

The course

The 2026 Surf Coast Century takes place on Saturday 12 September in Anglesea, on Victoria's Great Ocean Road. The 100km course runs from Torquay to Aireys Inlet and back, following the Surf Coast Walk — a mix of coastal paths, boardwalks, beach sections, and cliff-top tracks with almost continuous ocean views. With just 1,800m of elevation gain across 100km, it's one of the most runnable ultra courses in Australia — which doesn't mean easy, but it does mean achievable for runners who've done the training. The 50km option covers half the distance on the same spectacular course.

Solo or relay?

One of the great things about the Surf Coast Century is the team relay option. The 100km can be run by a team of 2–4 runners splitting the distance into legs, which makes the event accessible to runners who haven't (yet) built up to a solo 100km. Many running groups use it as a fun weekend event, mixing competitive runners with social participants all sharing the same stunning course.

Why September is perfect timing

September on the Great Ocean Road sits in the transition between winter and spring. Days are getting longer, temperatures are mild (typically 12–18°C), and the coastal vegetation is starting to bloom. It's genuinely beautiful running country in genuinely beautiful conditions. Early morning starts mean you'll catch the sunrise over Bass Strait — a start-line moment that runners consistently rate as one of the highlights of their race day.

Getting there

Anglesea is about 90 minutes from Melbourne CBD via the Princes Freeway and Great Ocean Road. There's no practical public transport so you'll need a car. Torquay (the start) and Aireys Inlet (the finish) are both popular Great Ocean Road towns with solid accommodation options, though they book up for popular race weekends.
