The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine region and arguably its most beautiful. Running through it at sunrise on a July morning, with the mist still sitting in the vines and the Blue Mountains visible on the horizon, is one of those experiences that makes you understand why people get obsessed with destination running events. The Winery Run Hunter Valley, based at Wandin Estate in Lovedale, does exactly what the name promises: it sends runners through the vines on a World Athletics certified course that manages to be both a genuine competitive event and an excuse to spend a weekend among some of the best cellar doors in the country.
The marathon, half marathon, and 10.5km courses all wind through the Lovedale wine corridor, past the grapevines and eucalyptus that define the Hunter Valley landscape. The courses are sealed roads and have been certified by World Athletics, making times eligible for ranking and qualification purposes. The terrain is rolling — not flat, not brutal, just genuinely pleasant vineyard country that keeps the kilometres interesting.
Marathon (42.2km), Half Marathon (21.1km), 10km, 5km, and a 2km Kids Marathon. Start time is 6:30am on Sunday 19 July 2026, with adult entries from $55.
This is not a subtle point: the Hunter Valley has extraordinary cellar doors, restaurants, and accommodation. Lovedale Winery, Brokenwood, Tyrrell's, and dozens of others are within a few kilometres of the race village at Wandin Estate. Turning race day into a weekend away is basically the entire point, and most runners do exactly that.
Wandin Estate is roughly 2 hours north of Sydney via the M1 Pacific Motorway. There's no practical public transport to the estate, so you'll need a car or a minibus if you're going as a group. The Hunter Valley towns of Cessnock, Pokolbin, and Maitland all have good accommodation options.
