Lush green hillside with a river running through it

There's only one marathon in Australia that starts and finishes at a chocolate factory. The Cadbury Marathon, held annually in January at the Cadbury Claremont facility just north of Hobart, has been a fixture on the Tasmanian running calendar for decades and has a devoted following that returns year after year. It's the kind of event where the finish line reward is obvious, the atmosphere is warm and community-focused, and the course offers genuinely beautiful Derwent Valley scenery.

The course

The World Athletics certified course starts at the Cadbury factory on Cadbury Road in Claremont and heads north along the Derwent River valley, taking in some of Tasmania's most attractive rural scenery before looping back to the factory. The terrain is rolling — characteristic of the Tasmanian landscape — with the Derwent River as a constant companion on much of the course. January in Hobart is summer: warm but rarely hot, with the cool Tasmanian air tempering what in mainland Australia would be brutal heat.

The distances

Marathon (42.2km), Half Marathon (21.1km), 10km, and 5km, plus a 1km event for children under 12. Registration closes two days before the event. The 2026 edition ran on 11 January; the 2027 edition is expected in early January.

The chocolate factor

This requires no further explanation. You run a marathon. You finish at a chocolate factory. The universe occasionally gets things right.

Getting there

Claremont is about 12km north of Hobart via the Brooker Highway. Hobart Airport receives flights from Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. The city has excellent accommodation, and the Cadbury factory itself occasionally offers tours — check availability if you're visiting for the race.
