A friendly fun run on the Hunter River

The Maitland Running Festival (the Loxford Maitland River Run) is a popular community event in the heart of the Hunter Valley, supporting the Mark Hughes Foundation's work on brain cancer. Based at the Maitland Regional Athletics Centre, its courses follow a picturesque route along the Hunter River foreshore behind the historic Maitland levee.

Pick your distance

Run or walk the 4km, 8km or 12km, or take on the two-lap half marathon, which features a new course for 2026. The flat, riverside routes are welcoming to runners and walkers of all abilities, making it a great event for families and first-timers as well as those chasing a time.

Good to know

Held in winter, conditions are usually cool and comfortable for running. Maitland is an easy drive from Newcastle and the wider Hunter, so it pairs well with a weekend exploring the valley's wineries. Every entry supports a great cause, so consider fundraising for the Mark Hughes Foundation. Register online ahead of the day at the official event website.
